Configurable Working Hours Preset
Characteristic
Short description
The PTV xTour and the PTV xRoute service are able to respect provisions on working hours when planning tours or calculating routes. If this feature is used, the PTV service considers these provisions by scheduling break and rest periods and by respecting limits on driving times and travel times.
Use
This page describes technical concepts which are necessary to understand the structure of the calculated tours, as well as parameters affecting this structure.
Detailed Consideration
Every preset stands for a pre-defined configuration of the break rule, the daily rest rule and the total time limits of the associated configurable working hours.
xTour: Configurable working hours and their presets are currently not supported in connection with a multiple travel times dima.
Name of Preset | Comment |
---|---|
EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_SINGLE_DAY |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the EU regulation No 561/2006 are observed that are applicable for a tour within a single day. Maximum travel time is the result of 24h minus regular daily rest period of 11h. |
EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_LONG_SINGLE_DAY |
In contrast to EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_SINGLE_DAY, the exception rules "Maximum driving time may be extended to 10h twice a week." and "A daily rest may be reduced to 9h three times between weekly rests." are observed in so far as the driving time limit is extended and the daily rest time is reduced. |
EU_WORKING_TIME_DIRECTIVES_FOR_SINGLE_DAY |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the EU directives 2003/88/EC and 2002/15/EC that are applicable for a tour within a single day are observed. With a minimum break time of 30min and a maximum travel time of 9.5h, a working time of at most 9h is guaranteed. |
EU_WORKING_TIME_DIRECTIVES_FOR_LONG_SINGLE_DAY |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the EU directives 2003/88/EC and 2002/15/EC that are applicable for a tour within a long single day are observed. If working hours total more than 9h, a break must be 45min long. Here, a working time of at most 10h is guaranteed. |
EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the EU regulation No 561/2006 are observed that are applicable for a tour within multiple days. Daily rests may be scheduled within trips. Weekly rests are not scheduled. |
EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_MULTIPLE_SINGLE_DAYS |
In contrast to EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS, daily rests may not be scheduled within trips. Not supported in xRoute service. |
EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_TEAM_AND_MULTIPLE_DAYS |
When two drivers form a team, they can take turns. In contrast to EU_DRIVING_TIME_REGULATION_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS, no breaks are scheduled and the daily rest time limits are raised. (Maximum travel time is the result of 30h minus the reduced daily rest of 9h.) |
US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_SINGLE_DAY |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the HOS regulations in 49 CFR 395 are observed that are applicable for a tour within a single day. Here it is assumed that the short-haul exception does not apply so breaks are scheduled. |
US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_SHORT_HAUL_AND_SINGLE_DAY |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the HOS regulations in 49 CFR 395 are observed that are applicable for a tour within a single day. It is assumed that the short-haul exception does apply so breaks are not scheduled. |
US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS |
Makes sure that those standard rules of the HOS regulations in 49 CFR 395 are observed that are applicable for a tour within multiple days. Here it is assumed that the short-haul exception does not apply so breaks are scheduled. Daily rests may be scheduled within trips. Week rules such as the 60/70 hour rules are not considered. |
US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_MULTIPLE_SINGLE_DAYS |
In contrast to US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS, daily rests may not be scheduled within trips. Not supported in xRoute service. |
US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_SHORT_HAUL_AND_MULTIPLE_SINGLE_DAYS |
In contrast to US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_SHORT_HAUL_AND_SINGLE_DAY, daily rests are scheduled. In contrast to US_HOURS_OF_SERVICE_REGULATIONS_FOR_MULTIPLE_DAYS, daily rests may not be scheduled within trips. Not supported in xRoute service. |
Overview of Configurations
As mentioned, every preset stands for a pre-defined configuration. The following table gives an overview on how the working hours are configured for each preset.
Name of Preset | break time | maximum driving time between breaks | maximum working time between breaks | working time threshold | daily rest time | maximum driving time between daily rests | maximum travel time between daily rests | daily rest position | maximum driving time | maximum travel time |

Even in the single day cases, a daily rest time is specified. This is needed if a configurable working hours logbook summary is given. The configurable working hours logbook summary contains values that need to be respected if the tour start is at or shortly after the reference time of the logbook summary (called "the last time that the driver worked"). However, a daily rest time later, the driver is considered as fully rested, and the values contained in the logbook summary can be disregarded. To this end, the length of a daily rest time needs to be known.
